SOCIAL JUSTICE IN BRAZIL: political convergences

NETWORKING – HAPPY HOUR BAR

Since the possibility of the election of the current Brazilian government was made known, international journalists began pointing out the fear and threats that minority populations in Brazil such as LQBTQIA+, blacks, indigenous, and women were now facing.  These realities are now becoming more present with the death of Brazilian politician Marielle Franco, as well as public threats and persecutions to journalist and former Brazilian congressman Jean Wyllys, and even more recently, to journalist Glenn Greenwald.

Due to these increasing threats, various countries, primarily in Europe, have generated foreign aid policies that welcome Brazilians facing physical and political danger, sending a public message against the politics of hate and genocide.

PLEASURE ACTIVISM

We can all agree we’re living in chaotic, aggressive, challenging, and very painful times.  So much of what we see happening in the world is touching our most core wounds and traumas; the social justice we are called to requires every particle of perseverance that we have.  It‘s stressful and exhausting. HOWEVER… in the midst of all this, we mustn’t lose sight of what brings us pleasure and how fully owning our desire and pleasure can be (even MUST be) an essential part of our activism and our liberation.

This workshop, inspired by the book Pleasure Activism, written and gathered by Adrienne Maree Brown, seeks to offer a perspective that pleasure AND activism can, do, and must go together.  “Pleasure activism is the work we do to reclaim our whole, happy and satisfiable selves from the impacts, delusions, and limitations of oppression and/or supremacy.”  Let’s explore what this means together!

INTERSECTIONALITIES

What are the complexities inherent to intersectional practices, those in the public political arena as much as those unique to individual experiences?  For this roundtable discussion, we have invited people who research and/or experiment with the intersections of diverse groups.

Carne Negra/Viande

Trailer: Draw With Me

DRAW WITH ME is a film directed by Constantine Venetopoulos in collaboration with THE TREVOR PROJECT about the coming out journey of a youth who identifies as trans and about how their art became their outlet for self expression, while on the complex journey of having to be yourself in a world that at times struggles with diversity. The story is one about the power of having the right support, self expression, and finding yourself at your own pace.

Brendon’s story first came to the public eye when their aunt publicly supported Brendon in openly being who they are. A ripple effect with positive impact has since evolved including this film. A short version of the film premiered at the Cipriani Wall Street Trevor Project’s Live Gala on June 11th 2018.

LECTURE : LGBTQIA+ REFUGEES

What are the main challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ people who are coming to Europe in search of refuge?  What is the difference in terms of how these people have been being treated in Brazil? What are the barriers to welcoming and including these people in their new communities?  This workshop aims to increase the knowledge of participants so they can promote safe and welcoming spaces for LGBTQIA+ refugees and seekers of refuge. Discussion will be led about specific criteria, tools, and practices that might secure the protection of human rights for LGBTQIA+ people who are experiencing forced dislocation on account of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or actual or perceived sexual status.
